The development of technology throughout the recent years has madea huge difference in the teaching and learning processes. It has sped theprocess of conveying meanings as well as structures through the usage of audiovisualand acoustic materials which sustain knowledge in the mind of young learners.Asthe integration of drawn materials, pictures, videos, and movies in theteaching process has taken place, the teacher’s job has been facilitated to theextent that he/she has extra time to illustrate the lesson thoroughly; hence, resulting in a faster and more efficient comprehension by the students.
Thisstudy is going to show how the usage of technology has facilitated the learningprocess in primary schools. The type of this study isquantitative based on a questionnaire distributed to primary Turkish schoolstudents and then analyzed by statistical methods. The sample given thequestionnaire is three classrooms consisting of 20 students each in 2nd grade. The aim of the questionnaire is to collect information from those students onhow they believe their teachers’ usage of technology has helped them understandthe curriculum easily and efficiently. The findings of this study are that the usage of technologicaldevices as well as media has made the learning process much easier for thestudents which, as the final observation, is a successful and beneficialapproach to be used in all primary schools around the world.
Key Words:technology, integration, audiovisual, acoustic. IntroductionIn the last 20 years, our world has witnessed the huge revolutionof technology that has changed all aspects of our life. According to learningexperts and studies, technology has become an essential and important part ofthe process of learning especially young learners.
To achieve this process, teachers and instructors must be well trained to implement the new process oflearning in order to create more integrated and interactive classes. By using technology, students expect a dynamic and active class from their teachers, so teachers arerequired to improve and develop their knowledge in this particular side. NancyKassebaum stated “There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new agetechnology, but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into theclassroom and make it work, then it fails” (Rao, 2012, p.1) Al-Bataineh (2003) stated that technology had been integrated inthe educational system and has become an essential thing in it in the last 20years. Teachers had started using in classroom in 1997 after gradually teachingthem in special conferences on how to use them efficiently. The issues relatedto the usage of technology are still standing to this day. Moreover, Young(2008) did a study on the effects of using technology in classroom on the levelof acquiring knowledge by students. The more the teacher used technology, thestudents’ grades got higher and higher.
However, a small number of teachersused technology in their classroom. She advised that more teachers shouldattend special conferences dedicated to how to use technology in classrooms todevelop their teaching methods.Lynch (2014) conducted a study that showed results of thesophisticated use of technology in teaching related to three issues in CostaRica. The first one included the question of what the similarities and differencesof language teaching and learning process between a traditional classroom andusing technology in the class are.
Secondly, are there any changes in the rolesof teachers and students when they are in a different teaching environment fromtraditional classroom? Lastly, how to fulfill the need of research studies thatpoint out the benefits of implementing the use of technological resources whenteaching a foreign language in Costa Rica? The answer to those questions closethe gap and provide a solution to those three issues. The significanceDavid Warlick said “we need technology in every class-room and inevery student and teacher’s hand because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Rao, 2012,p.1). The significance of using technology in learning process cannot becounted. Using technology is improving student’s skills and opening their eyesfor future, for example, it is giving students all of the available electronictext books and connecting them to other classrooms around the world, bytechnology, students can work as a team in some projects using shared documents.
This allows coloration inside and outside the same classroom or betweenclassrooms in different locations. Technology tools are making students more interestedand increase their level of education.Problem statementThe first problem that will face the process using technology inlearning is the expense of the tools which are necessary to complete theprocess of learning. It is impossible for all schools to provide their studentslaptops or iPads to achieve their goals to improve their student’s academic achievements. The second problem is the teacher role in the class and how they are dealingwith the new method of teaching students.
Learners have to be well-prepared byshowing them presentations on how to adapt with the usage of technology intheir learning process carried out by the ministry of education. Also, thereshould be workshops equipped with technological devices for the students to usefor the reason that they get familiar and comfortable with their new learningenvironment. Research QuestionsI- How do youngEnglish language learners view using technology in the teaching process oftheir teachers?II- What are thechallenges that will face young learners when they start dealing withtechnology in their classes?III- What are theadvantages of using technology in the English class? Methodology used1- DesignThe questionnaire will have 10 questions about how usingtechnological devices in classrooms has developed and facilitated theirlearning process throughout the learning period. The questions will cover mostof the aspects that are expected to be developed for the reason of improvingthe students’ learning skills. 2- MaterialAudio files, videos and movies will be used in the classroom thatare related to the lessons to be instructed by the teacher during the periodthrough which the usage of technology will facilitate their process of learningand comprehending the lessons.
3- ParticipantsThe participants of this questionnaire will be a number of 20students in the 2nd grade in a Turkish primary school. The gender of the samplewill consist of 9 male students and 11 female students. 4- ProcedureAs the first step, approval from the administration of theInstitute of Social Sciences will be taken to conduct my questionnaire at aprimary Turkish school. Then that will be followed by taking an approval fromthe administration of the primary school. After that a random selection of thestudent sample will be made for the reason of distributing the questionnaireto. The questionnaire will be consisted of 10 questions related to the usage oftechnology in the learning process. After that the collected data from thequestionnaire will be analyzed through SPSS to measure the level ofsatisfaction with the new method of learning. As a final step, the resultscollected will be used to solve the problems and find answers for the researchquestions.
Timeline of the studyThis study is going to be conducted over the duration of 6 weeks. The participants are going to be asked a question after classes, from 11am to12 pm. Definition of the key wordsTechnologyis the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especiallyin industry.Integration is the use of technology tools in general contentareas in education in order to allow students to apply computer and technologyskills to learning and problem-solving.Audiovisual education is the instruction where particularattention is paid to the audio and visual presentation of the material with thegoal of improving comprehension and retention.Acoustic can be defined as the audio-based materials that areused in the classroom.
