The first website and position I looked at was Sr. Manager of ITSecurity and it was a position located in Framingham Massachusetts. Therequirements for this position are a bachelor’s in computer science or related discipline,an MBA or advanced degree desirable, 6 or more years of increasinglyresponsible positions in corporate IT environments including security focusedpositions, and technical certifications such as a Certified Information SystemsSecurity Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)desirable.
It seems that some requirements for this position are desirable butnot required. The CompTIA Security+ exam is made up of two tests, SY0-401 and SY0-501.These exams will certify the successful candidate has the knowledge and skillsrequired to install and configure systems to secure applications, networks, anddevices; perform threat analysis and respond with appropriate mitigationtechniques; participate in risk mitigation activities; and operate with anawareness of applicable policies, laws, and regulations. The successfulcandidate will perform these tasks to support the principles of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
There are 90 questions with a 90-minute timeframe. If you are going to be taking this test you need to spend no more than 1 minuteper question. Studying for long hours and memorizing is definitely a big part ofthis exam. In order to pass the exam, you need a score of 700 with a maximumscore of 900 possible.
There are many positions in IT security that an individual canapply to right out of college. The position I spoke about earlier in the essay,is for someone who is experienced and has been in the field for quite sometime. Another position a college graduate could take a look at would be anentry level IT position. Entry level positions are a great way for a student toget into the industry and work their way up in the specific job field.
A bachelor’sdegree with an internship while you were in college is more than sufficient toget you this job as long as you have a strong knowledge and understanding ofthe subject. Many companies require you to be certified and have taken the CompTIASecurity+ exam, some companies will also pay for you to take the exam if youshow the initiative and knowledge for the job. The exam is comprised 90questions some written and some PBQ (performance-based questions) questions.PBQ questions are simulations of actual problems you will encounter in yourjob. For example, one question that is available on the exam is being able to makea custom pc configuration for a customer where you have to know the hardware ofthe computer and drag and drop the correct components where they should be andonly select the most powerful and convenient options.
If you search for jobs in your field with the appropriateexperience and have taken internships that help you and prove you are able to performthese tasks, you will succeed in your career and even move up in position andpaygrade. The more experience and certifications you have under your belt, the moreyou are putting yourself out there as an exemplary candidate for any company tohire you. You will succeed if you put your mind into getting thosecertifications and going out of your way to apply to jobs that require even morecertifications, so that you never fall behind with the technology and arealways up to date with everything.
