The first website and position I looked at was Sr. Manager of IT
Security and it was a position located in Framingham Massachusetts. The
requirements for this position are a bachelor’s in computer science or related discipline,
an MBA or advanced degree desirable, 6 or more years of increasingly
responsible positions in corporate IT environments including security focused
positions, and technical certifications such as a Certified Information Systems
Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
desirable. It seems that some requirements for this position are desirable but
The CompTIA Security+ exam is made up of two tests, SY0-401 and SY0-501.
These exams will certify the successful candidate has the knowledge and skills
required to install and configure systems to secure applications, networks, and
devices; perform threat analysis and respond with appropriate mitigation
techniques; participate in risk mitigation activities; and operate with an
awareness of applicable policies, laws, and regulations. The successful
candidate will perform these tasks to support the principles of confidentiality,
integrity, and availability. There are 90 questions with a 90-minute timeframe.
If you are going to be taking this test you need to spend no more than 1 minute
per question. Studying for long hours and memorizing is definitely a big part of
this exam. In order to pass the exam, you need a score of 700 with a maximum
score of 900 possible.
There are many positions in IT security that an individual can
apply to right out of college. The position I spoke about earlier in the essay,
is for someone who is experienced and has been in the field for quite some
time. Another position a college graduate could take a look at would be an
entry level IT position. Entry level positions are a great way for a student to
get into the industry and work their way up in the specific job field. A bachelor’s
degree with an internship while you were in college is more than sufficient to
get you this job as long as you have a strong knowledge and understanding of
Many companies require you to be certified and have taken the CompTIA
Security+ exam, some companies will also pay for you to take the exam if you
show the initiative and knowledge for the job. The exam is comprised 90
questions some written and some PBQ (performance-based questions) questions.
PBQ questions are simulations of actual problems you will encounter in your
job. For example, one question that is available on the exam is being able to make
a custom pc configuration for a customer where you have to know the hardware of
the computer and drag and drop the correct components where they should be and
only select the most powerful and convenient options.
If you search for jobs in your field with the appropriate
experience and have taken internships that help you and prove you are able to perform
these tasks, you will succeed in your career and even move up in position and
paygrade. The more experience and certifications you have under your belt, the more
you are putting yourself out there as an exemplary candidate for any company to
hire you. You will succeed if you put your mind into getting those
certifications and going out of your way to apply to jobs that require even more
certifications, so that you never fall behind with the technology and are
always up to date with everything.
