 Othello by William Shakespeare is a play that ends in tragedy. The use of characters helps create a connection to the overall theme that Iago is not a motiveless malignity- a devil who does evil for its own sake and that his cruel manipulative ways drive the entire play and leads to the demise of the play.  Iago plays a significant role in the conflict caused in the play. Iago’s personal motives is essentially what the play is centered around. In a sense, all the conflict leads back to Iago. His manipulative ways caused the other characters to have conflict with each other. This was all caused because Iago wanted revenge. “a fellow most canned in a fair wife, That never set a squadron in the field, Nor the division of a battle knows more than a spinster- unless the bookish theoric” (Shakespeare, ). Iago wants revenge from the moment that Cassio is chosen as lieutenant. He sincerely wanted the position but Othello did not chose him. This is not the only reason Iago wants revenge. ” And it is thought abroad, that ‘twist my sheets ‘Has done my office. I know not true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if surety” (Shakespeare, ). A rumor surfaced that Emilia and Othello were sleeping around. Iago did not know if the rumor was true but it added fuel to the fire and he ran with it. This lead to Iago’s manipulative plan to take down both Cassio and Othello. His plan was very cruel, it destroyed them emotionally/physically rather than physically. By gaining Cassio’s trust, Iago was slowly able to frame him for sleeping with Desdemona. Iago appeared honest to the characters honest to the characters because he is not doing any of the dirty work. The audience is aware of that Desdemona had never been unfaithful to Othello but Iago convinced Othello that she was, which caused him to be doubtful.
