Muhib QureshiSocial Studies 20-1Mrs.KatangolePosition Paper”Extreme Nationalism is like cheap alcohol, first it makes you drunk, then it makes you blind, then it kills you”. The Idea of nationalism is not new to this world whether you were taught to be patriotic in your childhood or whether you might have noticed this quality in others. You, as a citizen may not have done any actions which might have brought out nationalisms ugly head.
But, when a country gets too proud or nationalistic things tend to go awry. Now, does nationalism have positive outcomes? Or does it cloud your judgement and end in negative outcomes. This source gravitates more towards the idea that although nationalism does give voice and self determination to the oppressed, Nationalism inevitably causes unhumanitarian activities.
Professor Vincent Barbarino of New York State College is not pro-nationalism. It’s no surprise that Nationalism has brought endless amounts of destruction and war. but Nationalism causes division in societies where one class feels the need to feel superior to the other class, It promotes the Idea of Darwinism , Nationalism leans over to expansionist nationalism and further genocide. In silver lining, Nationalism has not always failed as a universalist idea. There have been many accounts where nationalism has carried on peacefully and brought on social unification amongst us. Strong Nationalist feelings were intensified by the theory of Social Darwinism and led to militarism. All the nineteenth century wars and battles scream the idea “survival of the fittest”. Those who believe in Social Darwinism are injected of desperation and countless acts of violence to overcome it.
The Genocide of Rwanda was the cause of the Hutu tribe feeling superior. Before the Belgians colonized Rwanda, The Tutsi kings ruled the region. The Tutsi were generally richer and urbanized. After WW2 when the Tutsi began supporting the African communist movements, The Belgians sided with the Hutu. The Hutu, overwhelmed with superiority the Hutu used radio as a form of propaganda against the Tutsi.
Tutsi were ridiculed and thought to be the enemy of their society. In 1994 over a period of 100 days over 1 million Tutsi people were killed and ethnically cleansed. Another example of this are the Yugoslavian wars. With high waves each of the Yugoslavian nations wanted to make it past surfing. Instability occurred and each ethnicity wanted to reach the top.
The Serbians, Bosnians and Croatians. The Bosnian genocide was brought on. The thought darwinism forced the Serbians to ethnically cleanse the Bosnian muslims.Nationalism brought on the the seven deadly sins and the pride and the greed of land led to expansionist nationalist ideas and further on genocide. This has been largely proved throughout the 20th century. The best example of this is the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1930’s, where Adolf Hitler and aggressive nationalist and a fascist brought on the extermination of the Jewish and non-Aryan people of Germany.
As a compensation or consolidation to the Jewish, The state of Israel was created in the 1947, disregarding the Land of the Palestinians and partitioning them. This led to the 1948 Palestinian exodus which led to the exile of 750,000 palestinian people. Since then the Israel- Palestine Conflict has caused many inhuman acts towards the Palestinians. The palestinians have suffered acts of ethnic cleansing and Israel hid that fact by suggesting that it was towards the Hamas group. Nationalism has again failed as a universalist idea.Although extreme nationalism has caused outrageous amounts of ethnic cleansing and destruction and wars, while disturbing the peace and prosperity of a free world it has brought together.
Take example the Six Day War, between Israel, Egypt , Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Palestine. Although not allies, the Arab countries came together to protect Palestine against tyranny. Although Israel did end up taking Gaza (Egypt borderline) and The West Bank ( Jordan Borderline), the social unification brought by nationalism should justify itself.Taking everything into account, despite a few in support or nationalism, unbiasedly, all through the twentieth century Nationalism has been the reason for an extensive number of political and social clashes, and also the seed of tyrant administrations. And also clashes between races in nations.
But this counterbalances the great highlights of a few Nationalisms similar to the protection of the minorities or the anticolonial part of the teaching. Subsequently, this position paper closes, in the wake of weighting the positive and negative highlights, that Nationalism in the political world is mostly a negative power, however except for some patriot developments that can be considered as positive.
