Living in a time of algorithm and digital revolution, many decisions that affect the way we live, the way we interact with the world around us are made by constant mathematical models which is changing rapidly. Mathematics can be challenging and yet frustrating subject I have ever studied, yet I love it! I enjoy the challenge to engage with unique questions, to play with mathematical ideas and experience multiple strategies to the same question, deepening my understanding of the mathematics, rather than just getting the answer from the textbook and move on. This often motivates and made me progressively try to understand the logic of more unique mathematical problems and the satisfaction I have in solving a difficult question after several failed attempts to a challenging question could not be more rewarding. I enjoy the study of math in how it conveys logic in numbers and variables. This challenge to think more creatively and logically encourages me to study both math and further math at ‘A’ level. I continue to enjoy the logic and reasoning required for the subject which has gradually improved my analytical skills further to motive my aspiration to explore it even further at university towards a career in either information security or data science and analytics. The paradox of how the myriad ways big data will increasingly become “part of the solution to pressing global problems like addressing climate change, disease and fostering good governance and economic development. Delve further, algorithms improve, data-crunching techniques are becoming more democratize resulting in privacy becoming much more difficult to protect and models used could be unregulated, opaque or wrong. Nevertheless, big data uncover unknown correlation, market trends, customer preferences and other useful information that can help companies or government make more-informed decisions globally these days. In school, I’m studying a combination of mathematic and computer science subjects, and what I like about these are that it explores the interplay between the two. I think the relationship between these two subjects is particularly relevant given the present state of the interconnected world. Reading books and articles about big data awestruck me at the alarming rate of how big data influence on almost everything and almost every part of our lives. I read how data analysis play a formidable political machine helping to identify supporters for vote in the 2012 Obama’s winning campaign. The apex of such relevance drove me to undertake an extended project qualification on the extent of media influence statistical analysis of the predicted outcome of the 2012 US Election. The takeaways this project has fuelled my enthusiasm to learn more about how statistical math of data crunching used from President Obama’s 2012 analytics-driven campaign were able to collect data over time, run complex algorithm to analyze possible election result. My project findings interestingly also led me to another big winner in the 2012 election, Nate Silver. Silver’s mathematical model using statistic and data crunching to run algorithm was worked by setting his parameters at the fundamental by determining the allocation of weightage and accuracy to each poll based on past election voters’ data including other conditions to reach the desirable result. More importantly, working out probabilities and statistics is part and parcel of daily lives as Silver’s book “The Signal and the Noise” also based on the Bayes’ theorem constantly.My ethnic and cultural heritages, exposure staying in different countries made me more emphatic and nonjudgmental in my outlook in life. Growing up in mixed languages and multi-cultural household, I embrace integrating well into other culture easily as a global citizen. I choose Waseda for its reputation as an internationally engaged university with rich history and location in Tokyo, Japan. I also knew Waseda as one of the best universities in Japan with the most established programs available in English as well as diverse clubs and societies. I also hope going to Japan will help me improve my Japanese language skills quickly. Mathematics stands out for me because I believe the vast science and technical curriculums at Waseda will equip me with broad transferable skillsets that will be highly relevant across many industries due to the penetration of mathematic use in diverse global businesses, industries and technology which will be helpful for my future career. Recently, I achieved the Senior UK Mathematical Challenge with a bronze award. Likewise, I had also done UK BPho Physics Challenge at GCSE and achieved bronze award. Working with numbers, I had chance of a work placement experience at CIMB Bank in 2016 and marketing experience whereby I was an active member with the school student-led Junior Achievement Company programme. In the programme, I collaborated and teamwork with other students from difference work scopes to achieve the successful sales of our enterprising products at the JA Trade Fair competition in Bangkok. Outside academia, I participate actively in the school Young Model United Nation Committee since Year 10, coaching junior members in the school club on conference protocol, materials preparation. When the school organized its 24th HISMUN conference in 2016, I had the opportunity to task the role as a Parliamentary and simultaneously designed the publicity campaign webpage.  My school head of upper school commended me for my communication and organization skills to oversee the smooth running of the conference. In Year 11, I successfully completed the international Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, and I am currently working on completing the Gold Award this year. This certification shows commitment in different aspects of a holistic education. During my present stay in Thailand, I did some meaningful outreach programs in areas of community services and conservation work. I had visited Ban Nam Kem community development center, which was one of the areas hit by 2004 tsunami in Phuket. There, I helped to install e-learning tools for the center initiative in English language portal, tutored underprivileged Thai and Burmese children living in the community in math and Japanese craft of origami. I strongly feel that success in student life is not just about doing well academically, but also having the compassion to give back to the society and share our literacy privilege with less fortunate children. Through 2015 to 2017, I actively participated rebuilding home for Thai people and the communities in Habitat for Humanity Thailand. In 2016, I was awarded 17,000THB on a school-wide travel award trip to Chiang Mai, embarking on a trip to Elephant Nature Park to learn about the conservation work and fund raising efforts by park rangers caring for abused Asian elephants. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences and I learned many skills such as independent, teamwork, leadership, diligence and determination crucial for an individual. I continuously participate as an active and committed member of the school tennis club since Year 9.My holistic education experience with Harrow Bangkok has given me a great experience – working and playing hard in a vibrant school environment, becoming active team players in my activities, as well as cultivating global mindsets with local and international friends. With these experiences, I look forward to exploring yet the many opportunities and challenges to personal growth and studying for a Math degree in university.
