JumanjiA movie that I recentlyviewed was Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle directed by Jake Kasdan. The moviestarred Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Rhys Darby, BobbyCannavale and Nick Jonas. I am a big admirer of the late Robin Williams, and whatI liked most about this movie was the relation the movie had to the originalJumanji film that starred Robin Williams over twenty years ago. This timearound, the film was adapted to relate to today’s technological and video gamingworld. The four main characters convert into avatars of their choosing and takeon symbolic opposite traits of their high school selves. Literal and Symbolic ElementsThe four main characters find a video game player witha video game they never heard of.
When powering on the game, they get suckedinto it and they become the avatars they chose. Spencer is a video game fanaticand he becomes a brawny buff explorer, football jock Fridge goes from over sixfeet tall and buff to five feet tall and scrawny, Bethany, the popular blondegirl in school, becomes a middle-aged male professor and nerd Martha becomes a rebelwarrior. The characters learn they must survive the game and alter the way theythink about themselves in order to return to the real world. This action comedy film follows the four charactersthrough the jungle where Willams’ character, Alan Parrish, was imprisoned forso long.
The movie was generated not as a remake, but as a proud continuation. Thecharacters avatars are symbolic to their real life high school selves becausethey learn that who they really are is all that matters. Even though their newavatars are opposite from their high school characteristics, it is their originalpersonalities that are needed for them to survive the game. This shows that it is not about looks and physique, but about how you really are inside that matters. Throughout the movie, themain themes of the film are apparent in one must face their fears and become independent. Before entering the game, the four students are told by the teacher that theyneed to come to grips with who they are and who they want to be. This is foretellingfor the meaning of the film where it is realized that It takes more than musclesor beauty to be a commendable person.
Those Involved The new story of Jumanji was directed bycomedy director Jake Kasdan. It was important that viewers knew that this moviewas not a remake of the original, but a continuation. Actor Kevin Hart states that,”There’s a generation that has no idea what Jumanji is,” “Sohaving that game and that world continue but fit this mold is something that wefelt that we could bring a lot of light to.”(Huver) the world of Jumanji was experiencedover twenty years ago, and those involved wanted to pay homage to the lateRobin Williams and bring it into a new setting. The actors and people involvedwanted viewers to learn something about themselves that they didn’t recognizethey need to learn.
ConclusionJumanji, Welcome tothe Jungle, was inspirational to me due to its original respect to RobinWilliams character Alan Parish. This time around, thefilm was modified to relate to today’s technological and video gaming world. Thefour main characters transfigure into avatars of their choosing and take on symbolicopposite traits of their high school selves. By studying who they are and whothey want to be prevails as the main theme in this action-packed comedy thatbrings back many memories of being a child in the nineties.
