I make a conscious effort to work toward my goals to communicate with others objectively, empathetically, and with confidence. Throughout this interpersonal communications course, my ideas about communication have changed in a positive way. Before taking this COUrse, I had a vague idea Of what competent interpersonal communication entailed. However, did not have a very good idea about how to achieve it, especially with my own weaknesses as obstacles. This communications course has given me insight into recognizing problematic communication as well as setting personal goals for improvement.
A crucial understanding I came to during this semester was how vital interpersonal communication is in the workplace. Each goal that I have set for myself serves to prepare me for such interaction. There have been many instances when have unfairly evaluated a person before becoming acquainted with them. In the past, my judgments have been positive, negative, correct, and incorrect. This is a very common communication obstacle, and for me, has often led to misunderstanding. This semester, Interpersonal Communications has brought this issue to my attention. Through my awareness, an important communication goal has merged.
My goal is to communicate without unfair bias. As I became aware of this goal, began to ponder its application in the real world and in my personal experience. In my personal experience, approaching a communication situation with bias is something that I have done on many occasions. I have done so for arbitrary reasons, from not agreeing with a person’s message, to being displeased by someone’s speaking habits. Not surprisingly, this has even taken place when initially communicating with people who I now consider to be good friends. In those cases, I was able to overcome my bias.
While am glad did, it does make me wonder what I have missed out on when I did not overcome my preconceived notions. Thinking about each situation, I came to the realization that nothing good or productive could come from my poor communication habit. Working toward this goal will benefit me greatly, especially in my professional endeavors. When I enter the professional world, communicating without bias will be essential when collaborating successfully with coworkers. While I may not enjoy what a person has to say, not listening to a message can result in mistakes, miscommunication, and low productivity.
Listening to a message without judgment can only yield positive results, such as establishing a better network, having a more pleasant and safe work environment, and solving conflict more efficiently. To improve this behavior and work toward my goal of remaining without bias on a consistent basis, will strive to communicate with more empathy. When attempting to understand and relate to others, passing judgment becomes more difficult. When making a judgment, will attempt to place myself in the other party position.
Doing so will allow me to better assess whether my judgments are unfair or unreasonable. Relating to those who we communicate with can be the determining factor in a relationship’s success. When communicating, we are more likely to listen to, be open with, and willing to compromise with people who we see as equals: people who understand us. To achieve that level of superior communication, it is vital to communicate with empathy. Communicating with empathy means making a sincere effort to understand another person, and to simultaneously provide comfort or feedback.
Since beginning Interpersonal Communications, have seen how vital empathy is to successful communication, especially in tuitions Of conflict or distress. Through contemplation, I came to the conclusion that have room to improve my empathetic communication skills. Doing so has emerged as one of my most important goals. Experience with empathy in my personal life is the central reason that improvement has become a personal goal for me. When we began to study empathy in class, I began to observe my own communication techniques as well as others’.
Observation allowed me to become conscious of the difference that communicating empathetically can make. When communicating with empathy, people generally have a more pleasant experience. Feeling as Hough someone else has genuine concern for the situation you are in promotes open communication and productive conversations. When communicating without empathy, one or both parties is likely to become frustrated at their partners lack of concern. Communication that lacks empathy can result in arguments and termination of communication between two or more parties.
Empathetic communication is valuable in any situation when two or more people are working together, because all people appreciate being listened to and understood. At home, communicating with empathy ensures that your partner feels equality and children feel valued. Empathetic communication can also deter communication issues before they reach a point that promotes an unsafe communication environment. At work, empathetic communication also promotes a safe environment In a safe environment, people are much more open to sharing ideas, collaborating, and cooperating with one another.
To ensure that my communication habits are not lacking empathy, it is important to ask myself the question, “How would I like to be treated in this situation? ‘ and act accordingly. I will also work toward being aware of the verbal and nonverbal responses of others, to ensure that they feel that I am aging an effort to understand them. Employing empathetic communication will allow me to communicate with a wide variety of people while conveying a genuine sense of concern. Perhaps the most important goal that has emerged during this semester for me is to maintain self-esteem and a positive self-image.
I view this goal as the most important because every other goal I have is dependent upon it. While this course is not the first time I have formally studied self-esteem, it is the first time that realized how important self-esteem is in both personal and professional relationships. Maintaining confidence in myself and in my work will allow me to enjoy public communication as an integral part of my professional duties. Taking this course has helped me to realize that if I am confident in myself, others will share the same attitude. M usually conscious of my own self-doubt when it is affecting me negatively. It is most apparent when I am anticipating a presentation, speech, or engaging in other types of public communication. When doing so, become very nervous and tend to blush, sweat, and speak quietly. Despite my own fears, I usually do well from the perspective of there. When receiving my grade or feedback, more Often than not am told that exceeded expectations. Despite that fact, I continue to become nervous. My goal is to overcome my apprehension of public communication.
Maintaining self-confidence and overcoming apprehension will open many doors for me, especially in my intended career field. Confidence is key in any position that emphasizes communication. Throughout my career, I will be required to make presentations and meet people. When doing so, I would like my audience to view me as a competent professional, capable of leadership and success. As a leader, I will and must have confidence in myself. It will also be imperative for me to gain the confidence of my superiors, so that they can feel comfortable appointing me to a position of leadership.
Continuing to improve my self-esteem is something that I will have to work at constantly. Knowing when I lack confidence the most allows me to actively work to improve my feelings toward key communication situations. Instead of focusing on my nervousness, will attempt to focus on the areas that excel in. Preparing speeches, working in groups, and communicating with people who I am familiar with are all strengths that I possess. Aside from my nervousness, have no reason to believe that I should not be confident when addressing an audience.
By becoming aware of and changing my thought patterns, can begin to change my behavioral patterns. Doing so will allow me to become the competent professional that I know I can be. The three goals that have addressed are currently the most important to me. They are in areas that I recognize the greatest need for improvement. This course has helped me to recognize my communication strengths as well as my weaknesses. Recognizing areas which I can improve in has been an invaluable Essen that has allowed me to set practical goals for personal improvement.
