“Arrest choosing her own fate. Antigone’s response proves how

“Arrest Ismene. I accuse her equally. Bring her: you will find her sniffling in the house there,” (388-389) states Creon. This describes how female’s were treated compared to men. The females gets more of a punishment which means that there aren’t equality among people.

Antigone believes that female can change and be whoever they desire. This would be shown in the play Antigone. Antigone believes that a woman should be determined and strong, even if that means going against the laws.

When she thought of the idea to bury Polyneices, Ismene answered, “we’re not born to contend with men”. (75) The way Antigone responding to that was going against what she said and choosing her own fate. Antigone’s response proves how women behaved back then. When the burial of Polyneices was happening, Sentry spotted Antigone and this resulted in how women were treated back then. She does this because she is stubborn and loves her brother very much.

Creon, however, believes that his laws would prevent any type rebelling. He is even more infuriated when he learns that a woman has broken his laws. The punishment for a woman was way worse than the punishment for man.

The stereotype here would show that men are more superior to women. Antigone believes women should be ruled by men because they are weak. Ismene makes it clear that women are just below men which shows they have less of their rights and can be controlled. Ismene tells Antigone that since birth, women “were not born to contend with men,” (75) this means that women were born to be lower and to be served. By observing Women in Ancient Greece gets treated differently and many women had different thoughts.

https://www.ancient.eu/article/927/women-in-ancient-greece/ shows that, “Women in the ancient Greek world had few rights in comparison to male citizens. Unable to vote, own land, or inherit, a woman’s place was in the home and her purpose in life was the rearing of children. This, though, is a general description, and when considering the role of women in ancient Greece.” This means many things that were given to women. Their rights were limited and was considered less of a people. Woman gets portrayed different than others.

Males thought to be smarter and better in general against woman. Sophocles goes against that idea and makes Antigone a brave and daring woman that would risk her life to help her family. As you can see a bige, in ancient greece males are more superior than females and that plays an important role in the play. The characters would be based on that idea which would result in changes of mood and characterization.
